2D animators convey stories or messages by making their characters, objects and backgrounds move in a two-dimensional environment. Besides drawing, they must also be excellent storytellers. They are responsible for clearly communicating a story or message by moving characters in a way that engages viewers. While most of the work is done on computer, traditional hand-drawn techniques are still a useful skill set to have.
3D animation (aside from stop-motion, which can actually be either 2D or 3D animation) is completely done using software. Anything created in a 3D animation program exists in an X, Y, Z world. That means instead of a flat drawing of a globe, 3D animation produces a sphere that can actually rotate 360 degrees. 3D animation allows you to create more realistic objects.
From the script to the storyboard, the animators will now proceed with either sketching or digitally drawing your presentation. Changes can also be made of course so don’t worry since everything will be refined too on this stage. But 2D animation is now behind 3D animation nowadays. Mostly because of our technologies and lifestyle. But even in cartoons and animations for children, 2D is still up there at the top.
